Re-Animator Herbert West action figure is a 2018 collectible novelty by NECA.

“Herbert West has a good head on his shoulders… and another one on his desk… From Re-Animator, the movie based on H.P. Lovecraft’s classic tale of terror, NECA presents the mad scientist Herbert West in action figure form!

The 1985 movie has achieved cult status for its dark and hilarious mix of science fiction, horror and comedy, and starred Jeffrey Combs as a medical student who will stop at nothing to perfect his reanimation serum.

As a clothed action figure, Herbert stands 8” tall and is dressed in his lab coat. He comes with a bottle of reanimation reagent, syringe, bloody shovel, Rufus the cat, and a tray containing the severed head of the last guy who tried to steal his invention. Resealable clamshell packaging.”

Available in August 2018. Meanwhile, compare NECA’s Herbert West action figure with the Monstarz version we profiled in 2016.

Blood on Satan’s Claw is a 2018 British audio adaptation of the 1970 film of nearly the same name by novelist Mark Morris (Cinema Macabre; Doctor Who). The Bafflegab Productions release is available on a CD or digital download.

17th century England, and a plough uncovers a grisly skull in the furrows of a farmer’s field. The skull disappears, but its malefic influence begins to work in insidious ways upon the nearby village of Hexbridge.

First, the cows stop milking and the fruit turns rotten on the trees. Then, an insolent ungodliness takes hold of the local children; mysterious fur patches appear on limbs; and people start disappearing… Something evil is stirring in the woods. Something that is corrupting the village youth, who retreat to the woodland deeps to play their pernicious games.

Hysteria spreads as it becomes clear that the Devil has come to Hexbridge, to incarnate himself on earth. Can the villagers, led by the Squire Middleton (Mark Gatiss) and Reverend Fallowfield (Reece Shearsmith), prevent the Devil gaining human form?

Starring the voices of Mark Gatiss (Sherlock), Reece Shearsmith (Inside No. 9), Alice Lowe (Prevenge), John Heffernan (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell), Ralph Ineson (The Witch), Thomas Turgoose (This is England), Rebecca Ryan (Shameless), Philip Hill-Pearson (Good Cop) and Linda Hayden (Angel Blake in the original movie).

Reviews:

“Manages to outshine its source material in moments of true terror… a must-buy for any fan of quintessentially English horror.” Starburst magazine

“A charming and chilling audio, perfect for a cold night by the fire.” Sci-Fi Now magazine

Blood on Satan’s Claw delivers more than two hours of a world going mad from the bottom up, in a production that bristles with fear both ancient and modern, and keeps you constantly on edge, waiting for the next episode of ghastly, demonic bullying to come and put you through the wringer” Mass Movement

“A respectful, accomplished and reflective interpretation of the source material, best enjoyed by the listener on a dark cold and windy January night, tucked up in bed at night, headphones on, illuminated by nothing more than the dim glow of a bedside lamp.” We Are Cult

‘Tormented visions of a beast…’

Mongrel is a 1982 American horror film written and directed by Robert A. Burns; it stars Terry Evans, Catherine Molloy and Mitch Pileggi. Aldo Ray has a cameo role.

Robert A. Burns was a Texas-based art director, most famous for his seminal work on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), although he also worked on other key genre entries such as The Hills Have Eyes (1977), Tourist Trap (1979), The Howling (1981) and Re-Animator (1985), plus minor entries such as Time Walker, Mausoleum and Microwave Massacre.

A boarding house in Texas. A grim practical joke backfires – and the slaughter begins. A vicious beast prowls the halls at night. Or does it? Is it the twisted imagination of the misfit tenants? Only one thing is certain… the killing never stops!

Reviews:

“This 80’s horror movie may be short on scares or gore, but it makes up for it with some enjoyably oddball characters (notably a young Mitch ‘X-Files‘ Pileggi) and a surprisingly engaging and fairly original story, despite the ‘twist’ being rather predictable.” David Brook, Blueprint: review

Mongrel is an offbeat, uneven, but semi-rewarding horror flick that is bound to disappoint anyone who wants to see a Killer Dog Movie. However, there are more than one or two surprises throughout the film that made me enjoy it to a point. I also admired Burns’ knack for paying off everything he sets up.” Mitch Lovell, The Video Vacuum

” …the biggest disappointment of the film is the lack of Robert A. Burns’ signature crazy production design. There’s no credited designer, so I assume Burns did his own dressing, but although the movie – like Texas Chain Saw – takes place largely in one big house, there isn’t much effort to make it interesting.” Christopher Funderburg, The Pink Smoke

Elizabeth Harvest – 2018

Elizabeth Harvest is a 2018 American science fiction horror film written, produced and directed by Sebastian Gutierrez (Rise: Blood Hunter; writer of Snakes on a Plane; The Eye; Gothika). The movie stars Abbey Lee, Carla Gugino, Ciarán Hinds, Matthew Beard, and Dylan Baker.

Newlywed Elizabeth (Abbey Lee) arrives with her brilliant scientist husband Henry (Ciarán Hinds) to his magnificent estate, where he wows her with lavish dinners and a dazzling tour of the property. The house staff, Claire (Carla Gugino) and Oliver (Matthew Beard), treats her deferentially but she can’t shake the feeling something is off.

Henry explains that everything in his world now belongs to her, all is for her to play in — all except for a locked-off room he forbids her from entering. When he goes away for business Elizabeth decides to investigate and finds she may not be who she thinks she is at all…

IFC Midnight is releasing Elizabeth Harvest in theaters in New York and Los Angeles and also On Demand on August 10, 2018.

Reviews:

” …so much of the second half consists of nearly-nonstop exposition that it can become oppressive. It’s a complicated tale—so much so that a character literally finds a journal that explains it in one of the more unique ways to convey exposition in a while—but I found myself less hooked on the twists and turns and more engaged in the imagery and the filmmaking.” Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com

“During its first ten minutes, Elizabeth Harvest is so tediously mannered, and lead player Abbey Lee’s performance is so listlessly affected, that an urge to bail is well-nigh irresistible. But then writer-director Sebastian Gutierrez pulls the rug and the floorboards right out from under you…” Joe Leydon, Variety

“Gutierrez aims for the slow-burn build rather than terrifying tension, but his deliberate pacing turns the film into more of a cold intellectual puzzle than a tense thriller. Comparisons to Alex Garland’s Ex Machina are inevitable: both feature predatory men holding women hostage in hermetic, high-tech, gorgeously sterile homes…” Tasha Robinson, The Verge

The Housemaid – Vietnam/South Korea, 2016

The Housemaid – original title: Cô Haû Gaí – is a 2016 Vietnamese/South Korean romantic horror film written and directed by Derek Nguyen. It stars Kate Nhung, Jean-Michel Richaud and Kim Xuan.

Linh (Kate Nhung) is a docile and hardworking poor orphaned girl who travels to Sa Cat seeking a housemaid job. Sebastien Laurent (Jean-Michel Richaud) is a French captain and owner of the Sa Cat rubber plantation.

For years, the massive mansion is rumoured to have ghosts, particularly those of Camille Sebastien’s late wife and the mistreated plantation workers. Once Linh comes to Sa Cat, she begins to hear strange sounds, have frightening dreams, and witness bizarre occurrences.

After some time, Linh and Captain Laurent become close to each other and develop a romance. However, their love soon awakens the vengeful souls of Sa Cat plantation…

In the UK, Montage Pictures/Eureka Entertainment is releasing The Housemaid as a Blu-ray + DVD combo on 19 February 2018.

Buy: Amazon.com

Reviews:

” …think less Masterpiece Theater and more The Woman in Black with a splash of James Wan. There’s an excellent chance The Housemaid will surprise you with its smartly crafted story and exceptionally executed chills.” Ian Sedensky, Culture Crypt

The Housemaid is a blend of genres. And, the use of so many genres here upsets the film’s tone. It is from period piece, to drama, to romance and into the horror realm. The film bounces all over the place. Only foreign film fans or fans of Asian cinema will enjoy this outing.” Michael Allen, 28 Days Later Analysis

“It’s absolutely beautiful to look at and is very similar visually to Park Chan Wook’s The Handmaiden which came out earlier this year. No-one’s saying that the film isn’t visually stunning. Sadly, it’s the plot that fails to come up to the mark.” Sandra Harris, Cinehouse

“A beautifully shot piece with lavish sets and locations – The Handmaid stumbles far too many times, mostly because it throws everything but the kitchen sink into the swirling mix.  Unfocused, it’s a prime example of not knowing when to pull back and when to give all you have to the best you have…” Michael Klug, Horrorfreak News

” …The Housemaid can at times feel excessively derivative, but the addition of its backdrop of colonial unrest makes it a unique experience in Asian horror. If the idea of a romance between a rich European white man and his Asian servant seems initially problematic, worry not, as there’s more than meets the eye to a film that doesn’t hold back its political stance.” Eric Hillis, The Movie Waffler

Four friends decide to spend a weekend in a Malibu mansion owned by an old lady. The situation is flipped upside down once they come across an ancient haunted tarot deck that will change the fate of their lives…

Reviews:

“Shows that even if a horror movie is full of super cool visuals, without real atmosphere or interesting characters or good dialogue or an engaging plot, it can still end up being an enormous slog to get through. I get what its trying to do, but man, this thing was tedious…” William Hopper, Letterboxd

“The film takes forever to get going, we’re at the thirty-minute mark before they even get to the house. The events of the first night are so tame it’s funny, not scary […] To be fair things do pick up in the last twenty or so minutes but its way to little and way too late. We can guess the big twist and we don’t really care.” Jim Morazzini, Voices from the Balcony

The Unborn Child – Thailand, 2011

The Unborn Child – original title: Sop Dek 2002 aka ศพเด็ก 2002 –  is a 2011 Thai supernatural horror film directed by Poj Arnon (Make Me Shudder and sequels; Oh My Ghosts! and sequels) from a screenplay co-written with Thanadon Nuansutthi.

The movie stars Somchai Kemglad, Pitchanart Sakakorn, Chinaradi Anupongphichart, Arisara Thongborisut, Peerawit Boonark, Chudapha Chanthakhet and Ganthida Chaang.

Trai (Somchai Kemglad), Phim (Pitchanart Sakakorn), and their daughter, Yaimai, begin to experience a haunting when Yaimai brings a toy home from a temple…

Reviews:

” …The Unborn Child is a serviceable horror film. It’s just barely decent, but entertaining, nonetheless. The story is interesting, despite being generic, there are some good jump-scares and eerie visuals […] However, there is a disappointing lack of horror in this film, and some story and storytelling elements are sloppy.” Cinematic Addiction

” …if you want to make a film about the horrors of illegal abortion performed up to when the babies are nearly nine months old, you don’t really need to wrap it up in asian horror clichés. Because it’s pretty damned disturbing in the first place. You don’t need baby ghosts or possession or cheap jump scares to make an impact.” Lho, Letterboxd

“For the most part, it holds together as solidly serious suspense but runs off the rails in the third act as it seeks to tie things up and ensure that all the characters get what’s coming to them, according to karma […] And it’s kind of ridiculous and fantastic at the same time, with one character smothering in a grave that’s full of crawling dead babies and another sent over the brink by a swimming pool full of blood.” Wise Kwai’s Thai Film Journal

‘In the end.. chaos will find you’

I Think We’re Alone Now is a post-apocalyptic science fiction feature film directed by Reed Morano from a screenplay by Mike Makowsky, The movie stars Peter Dinklage (Knights of Badassdom) and Elle Fanning (Mary Shelley; The Neon Demon; Twixt).

Having premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, I Think We’re Alone Now will be shown in New York and Los Angeles theaters on September 14 before expanding to limited theaters nationwide as well as coming to OnDemand on September 21.

Del is alone in the world. After the human race is wiped out, he lives in his small, empty town, content in his solitude and the utopia he’s methodically created for himself — until he is discovered by Grace, an interloper whose history and motives are obscure. And to make matters worse, she wants to stay…

Reviews:

“Unfortunately, a troublesome plot twist in the third act finds Morano and screenwriter Mike Makowsky losing their narrative footing. While this twist bolsters the film’s themes about constructing worlds to accommodate our own insecurities, it also squanders the emotional currency between Del and Grace.” J.P. iennard, Pop Matters

” …basically a two-hander, led by Peter Dinklage and Elle Fanning as two people looking for comfort in a world that’s gone to shit. Twists and turns abound, and while the screenplay by Mike Makowsky loses control ultimately, Morano’s subtle direction and the performances by her stars are the film’s highlight.” Punch Drunk Critics

“Once I Think We’re Alone Now establishes that Grace and Del represent love versus stability, the film doesn’t have a convincing way to reconcile the two. An adorable violin-accompanied montage doesn’t sell us on their partnership. A scene where they cruise blasting metal as Fanning head-bangs in slo-mo just seems like a beautifully photographed migraine.” Amy Nicholson, Variety

‘He wanted their money… They wanted his flesh!!’

Cannibal Mercenary – aka The Mercenary – is a 1983 Thai action war horror film directed by Chao Meekunsoot from a screenplay by George Lam. It stars Chatchai Plengpanich [as Alan English] and various Thai actors with anglicized names.

A Thai veteran of the Vietnam War and all around master of combat leads a group of men on a mission into the jungles of Vietnam to topple a dangerous drug lord and his cannibal army…

Reviews:

” …there’s so much shooting, punching, kicking and hacking, and it’s all so consistently loud, that it becomes a numbing viewing experience in no short time. Still, there’s certainly enough going on here to make this highly appealing to action, horror, exploitation and war movie fans.” Justin McKinney, The Bloody Pit of Horror

“It’s so filled with action it never becomes boring, and boy, is it bloody! Yeah, this deserves to be called jungle splatter with it’s fine sortiment of decapitations, stabbings, limb-choppings, squibs, explosions, fights and no less than two scenes involving people pissing on each other!” Fred Anderson, Schmollywood Babylon

“It’s as if the director decided that any down time would be viewed as failure, so he made it bloody as hell. There are decapitations, death by skull crushed with rock, grenades in shirts, and a very strange snake wrestling scene that doesn’t seem necessary but, hey, why not?” Sean Leonard, HorrorNews.net

“Most of the movie is non-stop violent and brutal shooting or fightings, some torture, and some short nasty scenes of head impaling, eye-gouging, chest impalement, worm and brain eating, and urinating. Violently entertaining and pretty well done for the most part as far as Asian B-movies go.” The Worldwide Celluloid Massacre

“Idiosyncratically edited, Mercenary has scenes of high-stress, noisy, tension-ratcheting quick cuts that appear to be designed to strain the viewer’s nerves to the breaking point, such as when a henchman threatens to waste a whining kid and initiates a death countdown. Standout imagery includes a beheading, eye-gouging, maggot-eating, face-urinating, a skull being split open by a spike, and subsequent hungry brain-gobbling.” Ideological Content Analysis Reviews

“Incredibly violent. Extremely graphic. And the final half hour packs a wallop.” Thomas Weisser, Asian Cult Cinema, Boulevard Books, 1997

Trivia:

The Bloody Pit of Horror states that Filmark International acquired the rights, “cut out most of the gore, added brand new (and completely irrelevant) scenes featuring three Caucasian actors searching for a valuable statue and released it under several different titles” such as The Jaguar Project and Jungle Killers.

Some of the score was lifted from Dawn of the Dead (1978).
