Mongrel – USA, 1982

‘Tormented visions of a beast…’

Mongrel is a 1982 American horror film written and directed by Robert A. Burns; it stars Terry Evans, Catherine Molloy and Mitch Pileggi. Aldo Ray has a cameo role.

Robert A. Burns was a Texas-based art director, most famous for his seminal work on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), although he also worked on other key genre entries such as The Hills Have Eyes (1977), Tourist Trap (1979), The Howling (1981) and Re-Animator (1985), plus minor entries such as Time Walker, Mausoleum and Microwave Massacre.

A boarding house in Texas. A grim practical joke backfires – and the slaughter begins. A vicious beast prowls the halls at night. Or does it? Is it the twisted imagination of the misfit tenants? Only one thing is certain… the killing never stops!

Reviews:

“This 80’s horror movie may be short on scares or gore, but it makes up for it with some enjoyably oddball characters (notably a young Mitch ‘X-Files‘ Pileggi) and a surprisingly engaging and fairly original story, despite the ‘twist’ being rather predictable.” David Brook, Blueprint: review

Mongrel is an offbeat, uneven, but semi-rewarding horror flick that is bound to disappoint anyone who wants to see a Killer Dog Movie. However, there are more than one or two surprises throughout the film that made me enjoy it to a point. I also admired Burns’ knack for paying off everything he sets up.” Mitch Lovell, The Video Vacuum

” …the biggest disappointment of the film is the lack of Robert A. Burns’ signature crazy production design. There’s no credited designer, so I assume Burns did his own dressing, but although the movie – like Texas Chain Saw – takes place largely in one big house, there isn’t much effort to make it interesting.” Christopher Funderburg, The Pink Smoke

Auntie Lee’s Meat Pies is a 1992 American comedy horror film directed by Joseph F. Robertson (co-writer of The Slime People and director of many adult movies) from a screenplay by producer and editor Gerald M. Steiner (Dr. Caligari). It stars Karen Black, Pat Morita,  Kristine Rose and Michael Berryman.

A devil-worshiping woman sends out her four beautiful nieces to lure men back to her place so they can be killed, ground up and sold as meat pies…

Reviews:

“The thing looks cheap as dirt but there’s a spirit to this thing that keeps it interesting and kept me entertained even through the more monotonous parts. Plus, early on, there’s this fantastic decapitation scene that’s gotta be seen to be believed. It’s abrupt, violent and hysterical and really sets the bar for the film.  The nieces can’t act worth a damn but that’s not the point.” The Trash Cinema Collective

“Robertson’s direction is very workmanlike and yet oddly stylish by 1992 standards. Most of the film is very brightly lit (uncharacteristic for a horror film) and shot predominantly in medium shots. This ends up leaving you with the feeling that Robertson was unsure of how he wanted the final product to look. What is shot in “horror movie” style though comes off as cheap and wholly ineffective as a horror film.” Josh Hadley, Film Threat

“Mostly ineptly acted and shot on a shoestring budget in Fullerton, California, the film is neither funny nor horrific. In fact, the only shock here is the spirited participation of mainstream actors Karen Black and Pat Morita.” TV Guide

Gangsters, Guns and Zombies – UK, 2012

‘They owned the streets… until now!’

Gangsters, Guns and Zombies is a 2012 British comedy horror film written and directed by Matt Mitchell (The Rizen and sequel; It Never Sleeps) from a screenplay co-written with Taliesyn Mitchell. The LMV production stars Vincent Jerome, Huggy Leaver, Fabrizio Santino.

Official synopsis:

The whole “zombie thing” has been hyped up so much that everyone thinks it’s the end of the world! Of course, where one man sees the dead rising from the grave, another sees opportunity. Q had a plan: drive the robbery getaway van, deliver everyone to the safe house and get paid – a nice, simple, plan.

Unfortunately, this is the first time Q has been a getaway driver. He’s coping pretty well though, considering; Tony (the guy who is ‘in charge’ of the job) is a murderous nut case, Danny was shot and is now bleeding all over the money in the back of the van, the Sat-Nav has a mind of its own, there’s a guy in the back living up to his name “Crazy Steve”, the safe-house already has police at it, and this whole “zombie thing” seems to be quickly becoming more of a “zombie apocalypse thing”.

Luckily, Tony knows of another Safe House on the coast. Not so luckily, Danny dies of natural-ish causes and then rises from the grave…

Reviews:

” The whole approach to the film’s horrific action is done in a mild-mannered or tongue-in-cheek way but the filmmakers ensure the horror crowd are pleased with lots of blood squirting and spraying over everywhere.” Horror Cult Films

” …I was less than enthused at the prospect of Gangsters, Guns & Zombies. But to its credit, the film is frequently imaginative, occasionally fun and always action-packed.” Joel Harley, Horror Talk

“Cleverly, the first act of the movie is played out predominantly in the van as the gangsters escape, with the madness going on outside in miniature zombie movie vignettes, some of which are somewhat scary and some of which are frankly hilarious.” Love Horror

” …a terrific horror film, a very funny comedy and not at all annoying in the way most geezer gangster pictures are.” MJ Simpson, Cult films and the people who make them

“In terms of horror, the film is never scary and seldom tense. But Alexandra Vlcek’s splattery FX work is kept busy during the film’s first half (oddly, the pace slows during the latter half), ensuring gore fans are well catered for with lots of practical bitings and shootings.” Stuart Willis, Sex Gore Mutants

” …this is a film that looks good and is put together with a definite technical craft and understanding of film. It is not a group of miscreants with a camcorder trying to give us motion sickness, instead there are fluid camera shots, an editor that knows what they are doing and all in all a very professional feel to the film.” The Lair of Filth

Jaws board game

‘If you want to stay alive, then ante up!’

Jaws is a new officially-licensed board game from Prospero Hall and Ravensburger for two to four players aged 12 and up.

As in Steven Spielberg’s 1975 blockbuster movie, the Jaws board game is divided into two major acts.

Act 1: Amity Island:

The first act involves the player that is controlling the shark to terrorise Amity Island by attacking swimmers, while up to three other opponents – playing as Brody, Hooper and Quint –  attempt to cooperatively figure out exactly where the shark is hiding in the surrounding sea.

Act 2: The Orca:

Once the shark has been located, the Jaws game switches to a second act. The board is flipped over and the game puts the three human players aboard Quint’s doomed Orca boat that is slowly sinking. These players must work cooperatively to try and stop the shark before it attacks and completely dismantles the boat. However, they don’t know where the player controlling the shark is going to make their next strike.

The Jaws board game apparently takes about an hour to play and will be available in late June for $30.

Blood Rise: Subspecies V announced by Full Moon

Blood Rise: Subspecies V has been announced by Charles Band’s Full Moon company. Twenty-one years after the last entry in the Subspecies series was released, a fifth movie is apparently in the works. Anders Hove will be reprising the role of Radu, the vampire character.

The movie is part of the studio’s Deadly Ten project, “a bold new experiment in interactive feature filmmaking” that will see “ten original Full Moon feature films produced right in front of your eyes”.

Full Moon will be sharing more details on the Deadly Ten experiment online later this week before Charles Band takes Texas Frightmare Weekend attendees “deep into the guts of the project” during a presentation at the convention in Dallas during the first weekend in May.

Meanwhile, here’s our coverage of the Subspecies movies:

bloodstonesII

Subspecies is an American, direct-to-video, horror film series produced by Full Moon Studios.

The series ran from 1991 to 1998, and followed the exploits of vampire Radu Vladislas, portrayed by Anders Hove, and his efforts to turn Michelle Morgan into his fledgling. Angus Scrimm of Phantasm fame also features.

A spin-off film was released in 1997 (Vampire Journals), which featured characters that would go on to appear in the final installment of the film series. Ted Nicolaou (The DungeonmasterTerrorVision) directed each of the five films, which included the spin-off; he also wrote the scripts for the sequels and spin-off.

subspecies7

The series was shot on-location in Romania, utilising stop-motion and rod puppet techniques to achieve the look the director wanted for the series’ subspecies creatures.

“Filmed back-to-back with the previous movie, this third entry in the enjoyable Subspecies franchise is the weakest one yet for one obvious reason – it pads out a few good scenes in a plot that essentially just covers the same old ground that we saw in the preceding film. If you took the best bits from both of these movies then parts 2 & 3 could have made for one fantastic film instead of one good film and one poor one.” Kevin Matthews, For It Is Man’s Number

Vampire Journals (1997)

A 19th century vampire, Zachary, stalks a more powerful vampire lord in his quest to gain revenge over the death of his mistress. In his search for the vampire lord in Eastern Europe he kills many of his servants and fellow vampires while cursing another to vampirism as well.

“I will give Vampire Journals credit for this – it’s very well directed, and has atmosphere by the ton. Nicolau clearly has an eye for location, and he milks it for every bit of it’s worth. Also, it’s one of the last Full Moon titles that actually resembled something of a classy production-okay, about as classy as a direct to video movie can get, but class nonetheless.” Joseph Howell, Talk of Horrors

Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm (1998)

Vampire fledgling Michelle Morgan has escaped the grasp of her master Radu Vladislas. Found by a woman named Ana, she is taken to a hospital where a doctor claims to be able to cure her vampirism. Radu, recovering from the near-death delivered by Michelle and her friends, travels to Bucharest to follow his fledgling. He visits the vampire Ash’s stronghold. Ash and his protege Serena plot to destroy Radu and employ the help of the humans, Ana and the Doctor.

“Nicolaou  clearly knows his vampire lore, but fails to make the characters in his script  at all compelling as the film lurches from scene to scene without much energy. It’s a disappointment given that  the earlier films in this made-for-video series were, for all their faults,  stylish and entertaining, qualities this one sorely lacks.” Paul Ryan, Digital Retribution
