Plot:

Two teenagers are murdered by a mysterious killer. They are reported missing but their bodies are not found. Two weeks later, locals are celebrating the last night of carnival but the machete-wielding maniac is lurking nearby and when a group of youngsters  decide to camp overnight by the river, they soon become victims…

Reviews:

” … solid slasher movie fun. It’s true that it spends far too much time on the incidentals (we really don’t need to spend quite so much time at the fair for a start), but this is forgivable as the central cast is pretty likeable and are certainly having a grand old time. The film itself is pretty well shot; it’s obviously aping Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) and has some nicely evocative shots. It’s a shame, though, that apart from the exciting finale the director doesn’t seem capable of (or even particularly bothered about) conjuring up and sustaining suspense…” Hysteria Lives

death screams

Poor lighting, poor quality sound, low levels of logic from key characters, a weak script, a nonsensical reason for the killing spree, underused locations (such as the fair and graveyard) and more House of Death holds multiple examples of how not to do a Horror film. The graveyard scene is, however worth a mention. One victim falls into a grave, then, whilst attempting to climb out, one swing of the machete removes both hands from the target, leaving him to collapse, stumps gushing blood, back into the pit.” The Robotic Patriot

Killed by Death’ is a 1984 song by British heavy metal band Motörhead. Clearly an example of Lemmy’s metaphysical angst, hypnotic Killed by Death did not chart and the promo video, directed by the manager of The Plasmatics, Rod Swenson, was banned by MTV for “excessive and senseless violence”. Among-Friends-movie-poster

Among Friends is a 2012 comedy horror film directed by Scream Queen Danielle Harris from a screenplay by Alyssa Lobit (who also stars). The rest of the cast are Christopher Backus, Jennifer Blanc, AJ Bowen, Dana Daurey, Brianne Davis, Kane Hodder (Hatchet and sequels), Kamala Jones  and Chris Meyer.

among friends 2012 kitchen party

Plot:

A group of friends are invited to an 80s-themed murder mystery dinner party. The good time takes a dark turn when one in the group hijacks the evening in an attempt to help the others come clean about their secret betrayals against one another – and is willing to cut through the bone in order to expose the truth.

Reviews:

“The movie works incredibly well. The setup is engrossing, the performances strong, and Harris does a brilliant job as director with balancing the film’s tricky mix of humor and horror. You’ll be laughing one moment, squealing the next, and loving every minute of it.” Dread Central

“Harris does a pretty good job in keeping the action going while telling the story of how utterly bad these “friends” have been to one another. That’s a good thing as Among Friends is a svelte 73 minutes leaving little time for any fluff.” Peter Brown, Shock Till You Drop

AMONG-FRIENDSBlancBobit

“Some of the truths that are revealed are a little weak also and this is even commented on by the characters. As some of the secrets are especially sinister it seems a shame that one or two character’s misdemeanors are more trivial but perhaps this emphasizes the darker deeds committed. The gore effects are slightly disappointing also and while exist to show the plight of the characters could perhaps have been a little more nuanced and left to the audience’s imagination.” John Townsend, HorrorNews.net

among-friends-hammer

“Starting with a bright bubblegum palate of the 80s and using wide steady shots, things slowly grow grim as the party treads on. When events spin further out of control and these friends turn on each other, the frame whips around, bringing the viewer into their frantic headspace while the color all but drains away … Low budget and somewhat flawed, Among Friends  is an otherwise sharp psychological horror film with practical squirm-inducing FX, plenty of pretty things to look at… and even a limo ride from Harris’ Hatchet II & III co-star Kane Hodder.” Cheryl Singleton, Fangoria

Phil Hardy (writer)

hd_100236738_01

Phil Hardy, who died on 8th April 2014, was a film and music industry writer. Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Hardy studied at the University of Sussex and the University of California, Berkeley. As a busy journalist he contributed to VarietyTime Out, and other magazines while acting as a consultant on music business issues and founding Music & Copyright, an influential industry publication.

His 1986 tome The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies (Harper Collins) covering nearly 1,300 films from across the globe, via 400 pages, with over 450 black and white, became a must-have for serious horror aficionados.

Meanwhile, it was as the chief editor and contributing writer of the hugely influential The Aurum Film Encyclopedia: Horror, Hardy will best be remembered by horror fans. Published in 1984, the book provides a chronological history of the horror film since its inception in 1896 through 1983. Like the previous western and science fiction volumes published by Aurum (and also edited by Hardy), most theatrically released films, including those from the silent era, have entries. The horror volume is international in scope, providing coverage of all films from all countries that have ever produced a horror-related title. The contributors were Tom Milne, Paul Willemen, Julian Petley, and Tim Pulleine.

POM 081

Video Watchdog‘s Tim Lucas has acclaimed the first edition as “the greatest and most influential of all books on the subject”. In a later review, he described the book as “an intoxicating road map to further study and the enthusiasms of its authors (…) planted the seeds for the rediscovery and reappraisal of such cinéastes as Jesús FrancoJosé Mojica MarinsPupi Avati, and Jean Rollin… Hardy’s hefty tome redefined how horror cinema was perceived by its admirers more so than any other single work…”

An expanded second edition, nearly 90 pages longer, was published in 1993. Kim Newman wrote nearly all of the book’s new material. This second edition was reprinted in 1995. As an indication of their massive worth, all four volumes of Phil Hardy’s Aurum Encylcopedia (horror, westerns, science fiction and gangsters) have been published in the U.S. by The Overlook Press, with the same contents.

Horrorpedia salutes Phil Hardy’s huge contributions to our knowledge of films and music and we have to say that despite the wealth of information on the web we still consult his Aurum Encyclopedia books regularly for reference, opinionated prose and pure pleasure.

Reviews:

“Lo-fi, ambitious and hypnotic, the film is certainly meant for those with giallo-inclined taste and previous experience. Sonno Profondo unfolds largely from the killer’s POV (though it’s not found footage), giving a sort of constricting tunnel vision feel. This is heavy, specific style and it wants you to strap in.” Samuel Zimmermann, Fangoria

Dead Bite – aka Gancore Gud (ก้านคอกัด) - is a 2011 Thai comedy horror film directed by Joey Boy [Apisit Opas-iamlikit], who also stars with Buddha Bless, Lakana Wattanawongsiri.

Plot Synopsis:
A hip-hop group led by Joey Boy becomes stranded on Mermaid Island. Unfortunately, the young rappers also discover that that is inhabited by zombies and flesh eating monsters…

Review:

“The action is choppy and for the most part too tightly framed to get a sense of what’s really happening, though there are a few decent shots of practical gore effects.  Joey Boy and his ensemble cast of musical cohorts are natural performers, and the scenes of them simply trying to survive are the strongest in the film.” Wise Kwai’s Thai Film Journal

“Contemporary B-movie madness at its most casual, off-the-cuff, and energetic, the slick production values, and enthusiastic gore effects make this movie feel like far more than the sum of its parts. This is a horror movie made by people who love horror movies, full of dope beats, and beaten-to-a-pulp dopes, and it ends with a sick wrap-around gag that feels like the kicker of one whopping, zombie-filled fish story.” Film Society Lincoln Center

Filth to Ashes, Flesh to Dust is a 2011 American horror film directed by Paul Morrell (Texas Chainsaw Musical) from a screenplay by Derrick Bishop (who also stars). It stars Meredith Laine, Linda Bella, Allison Ochmanek, Anton Troy, Teodorico Paul Sajor, Diana Quezada, Bianca Lemaire, Eric Lewis, Nicholas J. Leinbach, Christina Iannuzzi,

Plot:

Filth To Ashes Flesh To Dust. That was the motto the serial killer known as “Purge” lived by. A schizophrenic, driven by voices to delete the unworthy, the unpure from the human landscape. But if no one is perfect, and we all have flaws, virtually no one is safe.  A group of college bound friends find that out the hard way as a trip to the presumed dead killer’s lair turns into a nightmare: Purge is alive and well. Trapped beneath the ground where no one can hear or help, the six teenagers must face each of their own weaknesses and fight Purge with everything they’ve got, if they want to see daylight again…

vlcsnap-000016

Reviews:

” … one of those flicks that deserve an A for Effort, as its obvious the filmmakers were attempting to make something solid, regardless of the miniscule budget and a cast of recent drama majors. There’s an attempt at creating a dreadful tone throughout, some cool lighting effects, and enough gore to sort of satisfy the horror hounds out there. Combining the sadisticness of torture porn with the stalking/killing M.O. of a slasher flick, the two genres are spliced relatively well… or rather, it was a solid attempt to create something awesome.” Ammon Gilbert, Arrow in the Head

filth-to-ashes-flesh-to-dust-trailer-8144

“Purge’s hideout only contains instruments of death and some old newspapers. There is no explanation about how he sustains himself. His clothes are trashy and permanently stained with blood. However, he manages to keep his mustache and goatee perfectly groomed. All of the kill scenes are stupid. The first one is just Purge stepping on someone’s face. They die instantly. There is one kill scene that tops all the others in terms of ridiculousness. Purge punches a girl through her back and all the way out the other side. He leaves a gaping fist-size hole right in the middle of her chest.” Dusty on Movies
FTAFTD 5

“Purges’ lair looks terrific and a damn fine set. It was dark but never too dark and well lit. Purge is a fitting villain. When he attacks, it is with a viciousness that I loved, throwing them around like ragdolls. The rest of the cast all do fine jobs for a group of relative unknowns. The film is good, not great though.” Corey Danna, HorrorNews.net

vlcsnap-000076

” … minor quibbling aside, Filth To Ashes is a pretty damn good horror film made for almost no money and it certainly puts some of these bigger budgeted films to shame.  There are some terrific kills and good performances throughout the film.  I’m looking forward to more projects by all of those involved in the future.”  Gerald Iribe, Why So Blu?

Directed by Roger Corman, the film was written by Leo Gordon, F. Amos Powell, and Robert E. The film is a highly fictionalised account of the rise to power and eventual downfall of King Richard III of England, freely combining elements derived from the plots of William Shakespeare’s plays Richard III and Macbeth. It is also an adaptation of the 1939 film of the same name, starring Basil RathboneBoris Karloff and Price. The 1962 version contains The Battle of Bosworth scenes from the 1939 film.

Plot teaser:

Richard, the duke of Gloucester (Vincent Price), is dismayed when his dying brother King Edward IV names their brother George, Duke of Clarence as Protector to his young son and heir, Prince Edward. Richard wants the position himself, to become de facto ruler after his brother’s death. He secretly stabs George to death with a dagger bearing the crest of the Woodville family, framing the dying king’s in-laws. Richard is now named Protector. His wife Anne approves of his crime and encourages him to take the throne for himself.

Reviews:

What’s most surprising is that a director better known for movies like Attack of the Crab Monsters and The Little Shop of Horrors actually does a pretty good job with this lowbrow reinterpretation. It shouldn’t really be a surprise, though, when you think about it. Seriously, if you strip away the blank verse and the Elizabethan grammar, England’s most famous playwright has more in common with a B-movie shlockmeister than your high school English teacher would care to admit. Sex, suicide, Satanism, child murder, torture, toilet humor… am I talking about William Shakespeare, or am I talking about Joe D’Amato?” 1000 Misspent Hours and Counting

torrel05

“Vincent Price’s meltdown into tortured guilt comes at the beginning rather than toward the end as it might in any other film, which tends to tip the dramatic balance of the story the wrong way. The rest of the time Roger Corman focuses on the Grand Guignol sadism and torture set-pieces – a cage filled with rats placed on a victim’s head, a woman tortured on a rack, Richard drowning his brother in a barrel of wine. As such, Tower of London proves modestly entertaining.” Moria: Science Fiction, Horror and Fantasy Review

vlcsnap2011042110h17m26

Tower of London works as a curiosity piece foremost. It’s also a fairly solid film that’s carried by a great, smarmy performance by Price, who spends most of the time being an asshole that kills people (he’s even tricked into killing people he doesn’t want to!). Obviously, it lacks the elegance of Shakespeare, but it is one of the classier pictures Corman ever helmed.” Brett Gallman, Oh, the Horror!

“The low budget is all too apparent, and despite a transfusion of graphic violence and ghostly apparitions, Corman hits the mark only occasionally.” Gene Wright, Horrorshows: The A – Z of Horror in Film, TV, Radio and Theater

Review:

“At the first glance Snuff Trap looks like a porn movie. The digital material is not processed in any special way and the pre-credits looks as cheap and primitive as they can get. The lighting is flat and the acting suffers from being dubbed by other actors. But Mattei gets things going, and even if it’s a boring mission to rip-off 8MM with a DV camera and a very low budget, he’s doing a very fine job with giving the movie a nice pace and even if it’s filled with a lot of footage of people walking, it’s not boring…”

Screen Shot 2014-05-05 at 23.00.16

“More torture themed than actual torture porn the film itself is silly and great fun for both all the right and wrong reasons. Far from being shocked the viewer may find the effect of the actual money shot is to smile along with the daftness of it all rather than recoil in the intended horror.” Nigel Maskell, Italian Film Review

snufftrap6

“The movie isn’t as gory as its snuff theme would have you believe, but … the movie unashamedly throws full-frontal nudity pretty much everywhere, you’ve got lines as misogynistic and hilarious as “fuck off, poontang”, an evil midget who looks like he could be Verne Troyer’s shady foreign cousin, and in one instance, the movie splices in footage of actual hardcore porn. With sleazy sexuality on that level, how could anyone possibly claim that Bruno Mattei sold out in later years like plenty of his peers did?” Rosso Sangue Reviews

Reviews:

” … almost completely disregards story and structure, characterization and emotion in favor of mindless mayhem with only the most basic story-advancing plot elements to allow for some “logical” progression towards the end battle. The movie is very much a Western-inspired one, in that regard, favoring big action and speed rather than depth and meaning. Of course, some viewers might find that a positive, and that’s a justifiable position to take given that Godzilla is a series with its roots in the fantastical.” Martin Liebman, Blu-ray.com

“The music found in Tokyo S.O.S. is one of the better scores for a Godzilla film, composed once again by Oshima. Like Oshima’s previous work, there is some repetition here in the music; however, like Akira Ifukube, Oshima can get away with this as her music works so well even as a stand alone experience … Tokyo S.O.S., at heart, is simply one lengthy kaiju brawl between the three title monsters, who are entangled in a battle that lasts most of the film, something which hasn’t been seen since 1972′s Godzilla vs. Gigan.” Anthony Romero, Tokyo Kingdom

Bereft of characterization, GMMG contains far too many characters for so little time devoted to them. Still, Tezuka imbues a fanciful aura hearkening back to the magical works of Toho’s monster master, Ishiro Honda. GMMG often feels like 90 minutes cut from the previous movie, but is still a lot of fluffy fun replete with spectacular effects work.” Cool Ass Cinema

Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. features plenty of monster combat, for a change minimizing character inner struggle (it’s still there, unfortunately). Godzilla, Mechagodzilla, and Mothra—as well as two new Mothra larvae—get lots of screen time, as Japan is once again obliterated. Fans of atomic breath, light canons, and organic scales and cocoon webbing are in for a treat. The plot is pretty straightforward, but the American dubbing misses many of the nuances of the Japanese version.” Octavio Ramos, Examiner.com

Citadel is a 2012 Irish psychological horror film written and directed by Ciaran Foy, in his feature film debut. It was filmed in Glasgow, Scotland. The film stars Aneurin Barnard, as Tommy, a widower who must raise his baby alone, after an attack by a gang leaves his wife dead and him suffering from agoraphobia. It is an example of “hoodie horror”.

Plot teaser:

Tommy (Aneurin Barnard) and Joanne (Amy Shiels), who is pregnant, live in a dilapidated apartment complex. One day, when Tommy is in an elevator, Joanne is threatened by a group of teenagers, all wearing hoodies. Tommy watches helplessly as the gang attack his wife, desperately trying to exit the elevator. He finds her beaten, with a syringe in her stomach. In the hospital, Joanne survives and gives birth to Elsa (Harry Saunders), a healthy girl. However, Joanne remains in a coma for several months, eventually being taken off life support. Grief-stricken, Tommy is consoled by a friendly nurse, Marie (Wunmi Mosaku), who attempts to help him with his agoraphobia, the result of his traumatic experience…

Reviews:

“This is a basic story, simply and directly told by Irish writer-director Ciaran Foy. He doesn’t try to explain too much, he doesn’t depend on special effects and stays just this side of the unbelievable. As Tommy, Aneurin Barnard is very effective. He trembles and sweats with fear, he would seem paranoid if it didn’t seem the “demons” weren’t really there, and if they hadn’t really killed his wife.” Roger Ebert

“The structure was in place for Citadel to rise above its tendencies towards melodrama, a trope evident in Tommy’s constant coddling, but the triumphant finish doesn’t wipe away the questionable handling of its main character and his interactions with the crumbling world around him. The blueprint is there, but Citadel might have benefited from a different architect.” Drew Tinnin, Dread Central

“Since they’re all wearing hoodies to hide their faces, it’s actually kind of similar to Them (Ils) at times, especially during the centerpiece home invasion scene where he has to barricade himself in the bathroom. Foy wisely never lets the film get too bogged down in their motivations or an explanation for their powers, and does so in a way that doesn’t feel like he’s saving stuff for a sequel (a common problem in modern horror, and films in general, in this “trilogy” obsessed landscape).” Horror Movie a Day

Godzilla is a 1998 American science fiction monster film directed and co-written by Roland Emmerich (Ghost Chase). It was a reimagining of the popular Japanese film monster of the same name. The screenplay was written by Emmerich and Dean Devlin. The plot of the film revolves around a giant reptilian monster, mutated by nuclear tests in the French Polynesia, who migrates to New York City to nest its young. The cast features Matthew BroderickMaria PitilloHank AzariaKevin Dunn and Jean Reno.

Godzilla earned $379,014,294 in gross revenue before ancillary sales (VHS, DVD, TV, cable and Blu-ray). Despite its initial commercial success upon release, the film was met with a negative reception from critics and fans of the Japanese Godzilla series alike. The negative reception highlighted by critics included the film’s thin plot, acting, and directing while fans of the Japanese Godzilla movies targeted the film’s drastic reinvention of the titular character, which included its radical redesign and departure from the source material.

Plot teaser:

Following a nuclear incident in French Polynesia, a lizard’s nest is irradiated by the fallout of subsequent radiation. Decades later, a Japanese fishing vessel is suddenly attacked by an enormous sea creature in the South Pacific ocean and only one seaman survives. Traumatized, he is questioned by a mysterious Frenchman in a hospital regarding what he saw, to which he replies, “Gojira”. Dr. Niko “Nick” Tatopoulos (Broderick), an NRC scientist, is in the Chernobyl exclusion zone in Ukraine researching the effects of radiation on wildlife, but is suddenly interrupted by the arrival of an official from the U.S. State Department. He is sent to Tahiti and Jamaica, escorted by the military, to observe the wreckage of the recovered Japanese fishing trawler with massive claw marks on it. The Frenchman is also present, observing the scene, and introduces himself as Philippe Roché (Reno), an insurance agent. Aboard a military aircraft, Dr. Tatopoulos identifies skin samples he discovered in the shipwreck as belonging to an unknown species. He dismisses the military’s theory that the creature is a living dinosaur, instead deducing that it is a mutant created by nuclear testing. The large reptilian creature, dubbed as “Godzilla” by the media, travels to New York City leaving a path of destruction in its wake…

Reviews:

All the supposedly heroic characters wear baseball caps on… backwards. So the MORON alert flashes even before they spout trite dialogue. That said, the mildly amusing French secret agent element and the finale with the baby Godzillas ripped off from Jurassic Park are relatively engaging. The film was unfortunately a wasted opportunity with a Godzilla that is presented as just a giant radioactive lizard – without any kind of character – plus vacuous human characters that just annoy rather than engage the audience.

Adrian J Smith, Horrorpedia

godzilla-foot-1998-review

“It’s even emphasized by the monster’s revamped design, which bears no resemblance to any Godzilla we know. The thick legs are gone, the back spines are gone, the cruel, humanoid eyes are gone. What it is, in short, is a plain old allosaurus (or whatever paleontologists are calling it these days). Godzilla’s profile was always absolutely unique and unmistakable, but this thing here? I saw pictures of that in dinosaur books when I was a kid. I mean, Christ, he doesn’t even breathe radioactive fire! What the hell’s THAT all about?”

Killed by Death’ is a 1984 song by British heavy metal rock band Motörhead. Clearly an example of Lemmy’s metaphysical angst, hypnotic song Killed by Death did not chart and the promo video, directed by the manager of The Plasmatics, Rod Swenson, was banned by MTV for “excessive and senseless violence”.

Goal of the Dead is a 2014 French comedy horror film directed by Thierry Poiraud and Benjamin Rocher. It stars Alban Lenoir, Charlie Bruneau, Tiphaine Daviot, Ahmed Sylla, Bruno Salomone, Patrick Ligardes, Xavier Laurent, Sebastien Vandenberghe.

Official synopsis:

First half:

For the Olympique de Paris soccer team, this away match scheduled against Caplongue was merely supposed to be one last chore before the end of the professional season. Yet no one could ever have imagined that an unknown rabies-like infection was going to spread like wildfire, turning this small town’s inhabitants into ultra-violent and highly contagious creatures. For Samuel, the former golden boy who is nearing retirement, Idriss, the arrogant wunderkind, Coubert, the team’s depressed coach and Solène, the young ambitious journalist, this will turn into the most important confrontation of their lives.

Second half:

While the rabid supporters prowl about Caplongue, which is in a state of ruin, another nightmare begins for Sam. Barricaded in the police station with other survivors, he has to face the young Cléo, his grumpy father, and Solène, who hasn’t forgotten him this time. Meanwhile, Idriss and Marco, hidden in the stadium and looking for a way to escape, are also settling a few scores along the way…

Reviews:

” … this energetic and well-made genre bender is divided, like a game, into two halves … Originally released in France as separate movies, they’ve now been combined into a single feature that suffers under the weight of all the material, especially for such a throwaway concept. But Goal of the Dead is also a more intelligently realized venture than many a broad Gallic comedy or action flick, and as such deserves some recognition abroad…” Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter

Ramones-Pet_Sematary

Pet Sematary is a single by American punk rock band Ramones from their 1989 album Brain Drain.

The song was originally written by Dee Dee Ramone for the Stephen King movie adaptation of the same name. The single became one of the Ramones’ biggest radio hits, and a staple in their concerts during the 1990s. In the music video Dee Dee is shown playing bass. Blondie made a guest appearance.

Pet Sematary has been covered by a mass of artistes in a myriad of styles, from Anorak’s dancey version to orchestral and industrial versions.

Lyrics:

Under the arc of a weather stain boards,

Ancient goblins, and warlords,

Come out of the ground, not making a sound,

The smell of death is all around,

And the night when the cold wind blows,

No one cares, nobody knows.

[chorus

I don’t want to be buried in a Pet Sematary,

I don’t want to live my life again,

I don’t want to be buried in a Pet Sematary,

I don’t want to live my life again.

Follow Victor to the sacred place,

This ain’t a dream, I can’t escape,

Molars and fangs, the clicking of bones,

Spirits moaning among the tombstones,

And the night, when the moon is bright,

Someone cries, something ain’t right.

The moon is full, the air is still,

All of a sudden I feel a chill,

Victor is grinning, flesh rotting away,

Skeletons dance, I curse this day,

And the night when the wolves cry out,

Listen close and you can hear me shout.
