‘She’s dying to take care of you.’

Broken is a 2016 British psychological drama film directed by Shaun Robert Smith from a screenplay co-written with producer Craig Conway (Estranged, The Descent). The latter also stars alongside Morjana Alaoui (Haters; ScintillaMartyrs), Mel Raido (The Disappointments Room), Patrick Toomey, Stephanie Thomas and Natalie Louise Garcia.

Evie (Morjana Alaoui), a 25-year-old agency support worker, is desperate for a better life to escape her past demons. Left with few options, she takes the job of looking after John (Mel Raido), a bitter and resentful tetraplegic who wants to do nothing more than party.

Drunk and high, John and his friends make Evie’s life a living hell and she finds herself trapped and the centre of aggressive drunk Dougie’s (Craig Conway), attention. Scared for her life, and haunted by the nightmares she was running from, Evie starts to slowly crack…

The film is released on DVD on 8 May, 2017 by Gilt Edge Media.

Reviews:

“It plays like a social realist drama for the most part, but some creepy visions and a cathartic finale deliver more traditional genre thrills without ever diminishing the serious, and understated, work done elsewhere. Likewise, the music, from English two-piece Hyde & Beast […] are great and the upbeat tones are juxtaposed chillingly with Evie’s crummy situation.” Benedict Seal, Bloody Disgusting

“This is a powerful, angry film, low on budget but high on raw performances. Mel Raido as John and Morjana Alaoui […] as Evie deliver very different but equally strong performances. John’s drab, squalid house, now taken up with all the accoutrements of 24 hour medical care, is a dismal battleground for the war of will between patient and carer.” David Dent, Dark Eyes of London

“With nuanced characters and outstanding central performances, it’s a hard-hitting slice of darkness that can be marked up as a solid success despite the unpalatably sour taste of the final stretch.” Gareth Jones, Dread Central

” ...Broken probably has a decent psychological thriller up its sleeve but it just doesn’t have the script or style to pull it off. Shaun Robert Smith does create a grim level of staging which he can build on as a horror director but the story and writing here lacks both incident and tension, unable to tighten the screws of creeping, nasty exploitation horror in the way it wants to.” Tony Black, Flickering Myth

” …deserves credit for portraying the tasks and difficult demands faced by carers and their patients and it doesn’t hold back on its honest depiction. Flawed in parts but a very strong piece that has two confident central performances and slow burning gradually dark portrayal of two changed and broken characters.” James Pemberton, UK Horror Scene

“Not a pleasant experience by any stretch of the imagination, Broken remains a captivating film. Smith forces you to study his characters intently, to empathise with their predicament as they struggle to cling to any last hope of sanity. The conclusion, when it finally comes to release you, is as inevitable as it is strangely satisfying.” John Townsend, Starburst magazine

‘Fear. Human. Nature.’

The Mist is a 2017 American television series based on Stephen King’s novella about a town mysteriously covered in a dense mist.

The first episode is directed by Adam Bernstein. It stars Alyssa Sutherland, Isiah Whitlock Jr., and Bill Carr.

The series was developed by Christian Torpe and adds an entirely new set of characters. Torpe has explained: “I wanted to be respectful to the source material, but my feeling was there was already a great adaptation out there by Frank Darabont. The novella is 200 pages and one location, and we needed to change that to make an ongoing series. But we wanted to remain faithful to the heart of the story.”

The first season of the Spike series will debut on June 22, 2017.

Who’s Watching Oliver (2017) – updated with review and teaser trailer

Who’s Watching Oliver is a 2017 American-Thai horror film directed and photographed by Richie Moore (making his feature debut) from a screenplay co-written with co-producer Raimund Huber and Russell Geoffrey Banks (Ghost HousePernicious, Cam2Cam). The latter stars alongside Sara Malakul Lane and Margaret Roche.

Oliver (Russell Geoffrey Banks) is a mentally unstable loner lost in a psychotic life seemingly forced upon him. By night, Oliver aimlessly wanders the streets and bars of Thailand preying on innocent female victims in what can only be described as a truly shocking and humiliating killing spree.

Killer Oliver’s only possible way out of a mentally unstable existence comes in the form of the beautiful Sophia (Sara Malakul Lane) with her sweet eccentricity and naivety to the danger she has put herself in…

Review:

Oliver is a strange young man. A tall, lanky and awkward loner who lives in Thailand and sticks to a daily OCD routine: wakes up (with glasses on), showers (with glasses on), brushes teeth, dresses, combs hair and takes his oversized camera out on bus rides to a park where he sits to watch and absorb everything around him. He is undoubtedly clunky, slouchy and child-like.

Oh, but his nights are more exciting! You see, Oliver’s nocturnal activities are filled with taking his medication, waiting until 1:00am to Face Time with his mum, and then commit a little serial killer act before bedtime. Yes, Oliver is a strange young man. And then one day… he falls in love.

Who’s Watching Oliver is a case file on an autistic man who is under the intense control of a sexually depraved and abusive psychopath…his mama. Who’s Watching Oliver is full of monsters – a gory, torturous sequential slasher and a boy’s mother who dictates his despicable deeds to please her demented desires.

When the odd Oliver meets the pretty Sophia, his world is sent off course. Does she see the real Oliver or a freak? Can he share his dark secrets with her? And most importantly – would mama approve?

“Mama”, played by Margaret Roche is the quintessential sociopath. All her dispelled needs are projected onto her disassociated son. She created the perfect monster – a soft spoken, shy, and anti-social freak who lures local prostitutes and young women back to his apartment in order to please his warped mama in the most disturbing and degrading ways imaginable.

Russell Geoffrey Banks is the handsome talent who is amazingly transformed into the somewhat creepy and socially inept Oliver – part crazy and part lovable. Alongside Huber and Moore, Banks developed this “Forrest Gump meets George McFly” character adapted for his lead portrayal. Sympathy is poured into Oliver as he sinks into despair and questions these twisted motives instilled by mama.

Sara Malakul Lane is the beautiful Sophia – lost, sad and impressionable. Her instant attraction to Oliver is uncertain until the truth is discovered and her life turns back into the dark side she thought she had escaped. This is a first – Richie Moore’s directorial debut; Russell Geoffrey Banks’ first lead; Margaret Roche’s first psycho-sexual role. Haha!

Who’s Watching Oliver is filled with brilliant performances. The stand out being the obvious and convincing Banks – it’s extremely tough to believe he is NOT this mentally unhinged character in real life.

Oliver’s quirkiness becomes his exceptionally attractive trait. Lane’s Sophia is implausible at first, until you peel back the broken layers of the sweet side to Oliver and watch it become exposed to the compassionate young woman. And now for the ultimate monstrosity… Mama.

Roche is genius. Appearing only via laptop, Mama takes control at every angle and keeps her baby boy Oliver under her thumb. Her deranged cravings for brutality are sickening yet, you can’t look away.

Who’s Watching Oliver is already an award-winning horror film at festivals. thus far. So well deserved, I am excited for its release to the horror-whores looking for a new side of evil. Kudos to Raimund Huber for producing such an incredible story and Richie Moore for bringing Oliver to life. Both are seemingly major filmmaking gems to follow!

To conclude: This is one ruthless, harsh and heartbreaking glance into a lonely man’s life and his inescapable bond with his mother, at the expense of his sanity. Oliver is the 4th horror film to trigger my tears but I look forward to my 3rd viewing! Not only recommended, but required – any true horror fan will adore this psychological gorefest.

‘Did you ever wonder where nightmare come from?’

Channel Zero is an American horror anthology television series created by Nick Antosca. Storylines for the series are based on popular creepypastas. The series was initially scheduled for a pair of six episode, self-contained seasons, slated to be shown on Syfy in the Autumn of 2016 and the Autumn of 2017.  On February 9, 2017, Syfy renewed the series for a third and fourth season.

The first installment, based on Kris Straub’s Candle Cove, stars Paul Schneider and Fiona Shaw and was directed by Craig William Macneill. The series premiered on October 11, 2016. Channel Zero‘s second season will be based on Brian Russell’s The No-End House and will be directed by Steven Piet.

Candle Cove (2016)

A child psychologist (Paul Schneider) returns to his small town home to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his twin brother and a slew of other children in the 1980s, and how it is connected to a bizarre local children’s television show that aired at the same time…

Cast and characters:

Reviews:

“The series runs like clockwork in that nearly every five minutes, in the episodes we were presented, there is a legitimate unsettling scary moment to whet your whistle for terror. The series is sure to go down as a horror classic, so prepare yourself and enter Candle Cove. You won’t regret it.” Evan Valentine, Collider

“With its thoughtful, understated performances and visuals and its frank embrace of uncertainty, this show should be compulsively watchable. Instead, the repetitive plotting and clumsy scares punctuating Channel Zero: Candle Cove fill a stylish, spooky story with unwelcome static.” Emily L. Stephens, A.V. Club

“It’s a slow-burning but elegantly filmed watch where scenes and conversations and character personalities err on the side of understatement. This is perhaps intentional—the show, after all, features ridiculous-looking puppets, so the more dreamy pacing and visual style are a useful counterbalance. In a way, this approach suggests that Channel Zero takes children’s fear seriously, on its own terms…” Lenika Cruz, The Atlantic

Channel Zero might lack a distinct personality of its own to execute a hair-raising, short-form spook fest on the level of its concisely creepy source material, but it has an admirable, all-too-relatable emotional backbone centering on childhood fears, and a range of subtle and in-your-face frights, earning it at least a passing glance on your Halloween watchlist.” Mitchel Broussard, We Got This Covered

The No-End House (2017)

A young woman named Margot Sleator (Amy Forsyth) visits the No-End House, a bizarre house of horrors that consists of a series of increasingly disturbing rooms. When she returns home, Margot realizes everything has changed…

Seoul Station (2016)

Seoul Station – Korean: 서울역 – is a 2017 animated South Korean zombie horror film written and directed by Yeon Sang-ho. The movie is a prequel to Sangho’s much-praised 2016 film Train to Busan. It features the voices of Ryu Seung-ryong, Shim Eun-kyung and Lee Joon.

As the sun sets around Seoul Station, an old man thought to have died sinks his teeth into the warm flesh of a homeless person. Soon, the streets are filled with vicious zombies desperate to feed.

Hae-sun, a runaway, witnesses the frightening sight while her father and boyfriend desperately search for her. As the attacked become the attackers, the government declares a lock out of the station, leaving the uninfected to struggle desperately against the dangerous undead. With zombie numbers exploding, people are forced to flee with no place to run to, not knowing if they will survive…

The film is released by FilmRise on iTunes in the US on May 30, 2017. Studiocanal released Seoul Station on Blu-ray and DVD in the UK on 30 April 2017.

Buy: Amazon.co.uk

Reviews:

” …Seoul Station‘s aesthetic style and social commentary are certainly in-sync with the more political, European bande dessinée, known for its engagement with real life. And the film also nods at traditions set by George A. Romero’s rough-and-ready subversive zombie flicks, as Yeon moulds the gore and grotesquerie into admittedly understated social metaphors about hopelessness and alienation in a society ridden with inequality.” Clarence Tsui, The Hollywood Reporter

“Where Busan was a brash and frequently deafening spectacle, this is notably more downbeat, cast in a muted, perma-grey hue and focusing on those desolate souls trapped in life’s margins. At times it is oppressively morose, but it has a nice dusting of social realism to go with the violence, and reaches an agreeably nasty conclusion.” Gwilym Mumford, The Guardian

“As much as it has to say about the struggles of Seoul’s marginalized, this is not a movie without it’s guilty pleasures. There are enough close calls, creatively claustrophobic suspense, and hilariously over-the-top voice acting to work as a fun popcorn movie. It’s only unsettling once you let it sink in.” Assholes Watching Movies

“With the final fade to black dawns a realization that “Seoul Station” is a mature horror story disguised in a format not commonly known for adult content. Sang-ho Yeon has found an inventive way to make zombies as relevant as ever, without requiring soap opera theatrics for drama or snarling KNB creatures to convey terror.” Ian Sedensky, Culture Crypt

” …there are a few neat plot twists that you won’t see coming that add an extra bit of excitement, which the film needs because at 92 minutes long the sombre tone and sociopolitical messages do start weigh it down and it becomes a bit of a slog at around the hour mark. Nevertheless, Seoul Station looks fantastic, has a story to tell and is worthy of your attention…” Amie Cranswick, Flickering Myth

Dead By Daylight – video game (2016)

Dead by Daylight is an asymmetric survival horror video game developed by Behavior Interactive and published by Starbreeze Studios. The game was released for Microsoft Windows on June 14, 2016. Dead by Daylight sales topped one million units after just two months on sale.

In October 2016, the game’s Halloween update included Laurie Strode as a survivor and Michael Myers as a killer.

Gameplay:

A group of survivors – anywhere from one to four players (typically four) – must elude one player who is the killer in an enclosed area at night which will either be a secluded forest, an abandoned junkyard, a decrepit cornfield, or a haunted asylum. The survivors’ perspectives are third-person, while the killer’s perspective is first-person.

dbd-newslider-mainbg2

Survivors:

When playing as a survivor, players assume the role of Jake Park, Meg Thomas, Dwight Fairfield, Claudette Morel, Nea Karlsson, or Laurie Strode. The goal of the survivors is to escape the enclosed area, which can be done in one of two ways: either by repairing a certain number of disabled generators (usually, the number of generators is one greater than the number of survivors playing) to provide power to switches which open large metal doors leading out of the area, or by escaping through a trapdoor (hatch) which only opens when there is one survivor left and at least two generators have been successfully repaired.

The survivors’ movement options consist of sprinting, walking, or crouch-walking. They must elude the killer by using the darkness, crouching behind objects, and hiding in buildings, foliage, or inside lockers.

dbd-newslider-mainbg1

Killers:

As the killer, players assume the role of either the Trapper, the Wraith, the Hillbilly, the Nurse or Michael Myers; each of which has his own unique ability. The killer cannot run or crouch, but simply walks at a very fast pace which is slightly faster than the pace of a sprinting survivor.

When hunting the survivors, the killer must capture them by either striking them twice with his weapon (the first hit reduces the survivor to a limp, while the second hit drops them to crawling on the ground), or can grab them in one move by either catching them inside lockers, while attempting to vault over pallets or through windows, while repairing a generator, or attempting to escape through a trap door. The Hillbilly’s chainsaw attack will also drop survivors to crawling on the ground in one hit.

The killer can initially only kill the survivors by sacrificing them by placing them on one of the many meat hooks in the area and waiting for the demonic claws to eventually finish off the survivor, carrying their soul into the sky. After a player has earned enough experience points as the killer, certain single-use items can be unlocked that include the ability to finish off survivors instantly with their weapon, rather than the lengthy process of taking them to the meat hooks.

dead_by_daylight_chainsaw

Blood Web:

Both survivors and killers are able to unlock items, perks, and offerings through the Blood Web. Every action performed in a match gives the player a number of Bloodpoints, and the sum are added to the player’s total at the end of the match.

Each level of the Blood Web is procedurally generated, and gets larger as the character gains levels. The rewards are connected to each other in a radial tree, and players must purchase rewards along the progression path to gain access to others. Once every reward on the tree has been purchased, the Blood Web will generate a new level for the player to progress to, increasing that character’s level.

dead-by-daylight-tips-and-guide-005

Setting:

The game takes place across four locales (split into thirteen maps in total) which are based on the places the killers became murderers. Over time, the evilness of their actions accumulated there until it attracted the attention of the Entity, an unknown force of darkness from a place with no name. The Entity pulls those who encounter it into a purgatory of its own construction, where they must play an endless game of life or death in the Entity’s recreations. The killers, who worship the Entity, are tasked with hunting down the survivors and sacrificing them, while the survivors seek an escape from the nightmare.

maxresdefault

Plot:

The Entity, a supernatural being hailing from some ancient, evil place, is awakened from its slumber whenever it is summoned by actions of great violence and malice. The killers, exclusively serial murderers, are pulled out of reality by it and convinced to do its bidding. In order to maintain its existence, the Entity requires sacrifices, and demands that they hunt and kill the survivors so it can feed off their hope and steal a piece of their soul upon death. Then they are brought back to life to repeat the trial, endlessly attempting to escape.

The survivors are pulled into the Entity’s constructed world when they wander too close to the places the killers were taken from, disappearing from the real world without a trace. They end up at a lonely campfire, where they rest between trials, until a killer pursues them again. Escaping from the grounds always takes the survivors back to the campfire, and offerings can be created to be burnt at it and appeal for the Entity’s favor. Since the Entity feeds off the hope of the survivors to escape, it helps them just as much as the killers, acting as an impartial observer of the hunt, stepping in only to claim those hanged on its hooks.

dead-by-daylight-cover-6

Reception:

“As players become more familiar with both roles, the horror dissipates and they begin to play for the competitive element alone. The poor matchmaking and the highly exploitable scoring system make Dead by Daylight less competitive than it should be, resulting in gameplay which doesn’t resemble the horror experience it sets out to be.” Joab Gilroy, Gamespot

“It might be short-lived and plagued by lobby issues, but Dead by Daylight is whip-smart, original, exciting and genuinely frightening. It puts you right at the centre of your own slasher movie, then asks you if you’ve got the guts and cunning to slay or survive. Only time will tell whether it can evolve into a long-term hit but, right now, it’s a terrifying new entry on the multiplayer scene.” Stuart Andrews, Trusted Reviews

“When Dead By Daylight was first launched, it was a flawed but fun game that needed a bit more work to tighten things up. Since its release, Behaviour Interactive has spent the last few months doing just that; it’s in a really good place right now. It has a healthy, active community where the player base can also go and interact with the developers on a weekly basis. All in all, Dead By Daylight is an amazing survival horror experience… Luke Lawrie, Stevivor

‘They owned the streets… until now!’

Gangsters, Guns and Zombies is a 2012 British comedy horror film written and directed by Matt Mitchell (The Rizen and sequel; It Never Sleeps) from a screenplay co-written with Taliesyn Mitchell. The LMV production stars Vincent Jerome, Huggy Leaver, Fabrizio Santino.

Official synopsis:

The whole “zombie thing” has been hyped up so much that everyone thinks it’s the end of the world! Of course, where one man sees the dead rising from the grave, another sees opportunity. Q had a plan: drive the robbery getaway van, deliver everyone to the safe house and get paid – a nice, simple, plan.

Unfortunately, this is the first time Q has been a getaway driver. He’s coping pretty well though, considering; Tony (the guy who is ‘in charge’ of the job) is a murderous nut case, Danny was shot and is now bleeding all over the money in the back of the van, the Sat-Nav has a mind of its own, there’s a guy in the back living up to his name “Crazy Steve”, the safe-house already has police at it, and this whole “zombie thing” seems to be quickly becoming more of a “zombie apocalypse thing”.

Luckily, Tony knows of another Safe House on the coast. Not so luckily, Danny dies of natural-ish causes and then rises from the grave…

Reviews:

” The whole approach to the film’s horrific action is done in a mild-mannered or tongue-in-cheek way but the filmmakers ensure the horror crowd are pleased with lots of blood squirting and spraying over everywhere.” Bat, Horror Cult Films

” …I was less than enthused at the prospect of Gangsters, Guns & Zombies. But to its credit, the film is frequently imaginative, occasionally fun and always action-packed.” Joel Harley, Horror Talk

“Cleverly, the first act of the movie is played out predominantly in the van as the gangsters escape, with the madness going on outside in miniature zombie movie vignettes, some of which are somewhat scary and some of which are frankly hilarious.” Love Horror

” …a terrific horror film, a very funny comedy and not at all annoying in the way most geezer gangster pictures are.” MJ Simpson, Cult films and the people who make them

“In terms of horror, the film is never scary and seldom tense. But Alexandra Vlcek’s splattery FX work is kept busy during the film’s first half (oddly, the pace slows during the latter half), ensuring gore fans are well catered for with lots of practical bitings and shootings.” Stuart Willis, Sex Gore Mutants

” …this is a film that looks good and is put together with a definite technical craft and understanding of film. It is not a group of miscreants with a camcorder trying to give us motion sickness, instead there are fluid camera shots, an editor that knows what they are doing and all in all a very professional feel to the film.” The Lair of Filth

Reviews:

“Outside of the godawful morphing effects, the practical wasp-monster effects are enjoyable for their B-movie chutzpah, and the supporting cast (Gerrit Graham, Jay Richardson, the smokin’ hot Melissa Brasselle) all know exactly what kind of movie they’re in and perform their duties with zeal. Not a complete waste of time.” Aaron Christensen, Horror 101 with Dr. A.C.

“Director Jim Wynorski makes movies fast and cheap and this one’s no exception. The more you see of the silly makeup, the less effective it is.” Mike Mayo, Videohound’s Horror Show

“The main problem in this outing is the visuals. Poor wasp-swarming animation, repetitive and unconvincing sound effects, incredibly pitiful computer graphics for unobscured transformations, and a tremendous, rubbery wasp costume are but a few of the amateurish approaches to what could have been a moderately entertaining monster movie.” The Massie Twins, Gone with the Twins

” …includes a fellatio scene that will have you falling down laughing. This silliness about wasp hormones turning a human into a “bee girl” was directed by Jim Wynorski with his usual lack of subtlety and his continuing penchant for bimboesque big-breasted beauties.” John Stanley, Creature Features
