Auntie Lee’s Meat Pies (USA, 1992)

‘A black comedy about cannibalism… done tastefully’

Auntie Lee’s Meat Pies is a 1992 American comedy horror film directed by Joseph F. Robertson (co-writer of The Slime People and director of many adult movies) from a screenplay by producer and editor Gerald M. Steiner (Dr. Caligari). It stars Karen Black, Pat Morita,  Kristine Rose and Michael Berryman.

A devil-worshiping woman sends out her four beautiful nieces to lure men back to her place so they can be killed, ground up and sold as meat pies…

Reviews:

“The thing looks cheap as dirt but there’s a spirit to this thing that keeps it interesting and kept me entertained even through the more monotonous parts. Plus, early on, there’s this fantastic decapitation scene that’s gotta be seen to be believed. It’s abrupt, violent and hysterical and really sets the bar for the film.  The nieces can’t act worth a damn but that’s not the point.” The Trash Cinema Collective

“Robertson’s direction is very workmanlike and yet oddly stylish by 1992 standards. Most of the film is very brightly lit (uncharacteristic for a horror film) and shot predominantly in medium shots. This ends up leaving you with the feeling that Robertson was unsure of how he wanted the final product to look. What is shot in “horror movie” style though comes off as cheap and wholly ineffective as a horror film.” Josh Hadley, Film Threat

“Mostly ineptly acted and shot on a shoestring budget in Fullerton, California, the film is neither funny nor horrific. In fact, the only shock here is the spirited participation of mainstream actors Karen Black and Pat Morita.” TV Guide

For years, the massive mansion is rumoured to have ghosts, particularly those of Camille Sebastien’s late wife and the mistreated plantation workers. Once Linh comes to Sa Cat, she begins to hear strange sounds, have frightening dreams, and witness bizarre occurrences.

After some time, Linh and Captain Laurent become close to each other and develop a romance. However, their love soon awakens the vengeful souls of Sa Cat plantation…

In the UK, Montage Pictures/Eureka Entertainment is releasing The Housemaid as a Blu-ray + DVD combo on 19 February 2018.

Reviews:

” …think less Masterpiece Theater and more The Woman in Black with a splash of James Wan. There’s an excellent chance The Housemaid will surprise you with its smartly crafted story and exceptionally executed chills.” Ian Sedensky, Culture Crypt

The Housemaid is a blend of genres. And, the use of so many genres here upsets the film’s tone. It is from period piece, to drama, to romance and into the horror realm. The film bounces all over the place. Only foreign film fans or fans of Asian cinema will enjoy this outing.” Michael Allen, 28 Days Later Analysis

“It’s absolutely beautiful to look at and is very similar visually to Park Chan Wook’s The Handmaiden which came out earlier this year. No-one’s saying that the film isn’t visually stunning. Sadly, it’s the plot that fails to come up to the mark.” Sandra Harris, Cinehouse

“A beautifully shot piece with lavish sets and locations – The Handmaid stumbles far too many times, mostly because it throws everything but the kitchen sink into the swirling mix.  Unfocused, it’s a prime example of not knowing when to pull back and when to give all you have to the best you have…” Michael Klug, Horrorfreak News

” …The Housemaid can at times feel excessively derivative, but the addition of its backdrop of colonial unrest makes it a unique experience in Asian horror. If the idea of a romance between a rich European white man and his Asian servant seems initially problematic, worry not, as there’s more than meets the eye to a film that doesn’t hold back its political stance.” Eric Hillis, The Movie Waffler

Mongrel – USA, 1982

‘Tormented visions of a beast…’

Mongrel is a 1982 American horror film written and directed by Robert A. Burns; it stars Terry Evans, Catherine Molloy and Mitch Pileggi. Aldo Ray has a cameo role.

Robert A. Burns was a Texas-based art director, most famous for his seminal work on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), although he also worked on other key genre entries such as The Hills Have Eyes (1977), Tourist Trap (1979), The Howling (1981) and Re-Animator (1985), plus minor entries such as Time Walker, Mausoleum and Microwave Massacre.

A boarding house in Texas. A grim practical joke backfires – and the slaughter begins. A vicious beast prowls the halls at night. Or does it? Is it the twisted imagination of the misfit tenants? Only one thing is certain… the killing never stops!

Reviews:

“This 80’s horror movie may be short on scares or gore, but it makes up for it with some enjoyably oddball characters (notably a young Mitch ‘X-Files‘ Pileggi) and a surprisingly engaging and fairly original story, despite the ‘twist’ being rather predictable.” David Brook, Blueprint: review

Mongrel is an offbeat, uneven, but semi-rewarding horror flick that is bound to disappoint anyone who wants to see a Killer Dog Movie. However, there are more than one or two surprises throughout the film that made me enjoy it to a point. I also admired Burns’ knack for paying off everything he sets up.” Mitch Lovell, The Video Vacuum

” …the biggest disappointment of the film is the lack of Robert A. Burns’ signature crazy production design. There’s no credited designer, so I assume Burns did his own dressing, but although the movie – like Texas Chain Saw – takes place largely in one big house, there isn’t much effort to make it interesting.” Christopher Funderburg, The Pink Smoke

‘He wanted their money… They wanted his flesh!!’

Cannibal Mercenary – aka The Mercenary – is a 1983 Thai action war horror film directed by Chao Meekunsoot from a screenplay by George Lam. It stars Chatchai Plengpanich [as Alan English] and various Thai actors with anglicized names.

A Thai veteran of the Vietnam War and all around master of combat leads a group of men on a mission into the jungles of Vietnam to topple a dangerous drug lord and his cannibal army…

Reviews:

” …there’s so much shooting, punching, kicking and hacking, and it’s all so consistently loud, that it becomes a numbing viewing experience in no short time. Still, there’s certainly enough going on here to make this highly appealing to action, horror, exploitation and war movie fans.” Justin McKinney, The Bloody Pit of Horror

“It’s so filled with action it never becomes boring, and boy, is it bloody! Yeah, this deserves to be called jungle splatter with it’s fine sortiment of decapitations, stabbings, limb-choppings, squibs, explosions, fights and no less than two scenes involving people pissing on each other!” Fred Anderson, Schmollywood Babylon

“It’s as if the director decided that any down time would be viewed as failure, so he made it bloody as hell. There are decapitations, death by skull crushed with rock, grenades in shirts, and a very strange snake wrestling scene that doesn’t seem necessary but, hey, why not?” Sean Leonard, HorrorNews.net

“Most of the movie is non-stop violent and brutal shooting or fightings, some torture, and some short nasty scenes of head impaling, eye-gouging, chest impalement, worm and brain eating, and urinating. Violently entertaining and pretty well done for the most part as far as Asian B-movies go.” The Worldwide Celluloid Massacre

“Idiosyncratically edited, Mercenary has scenes of high-stress, noisy, tension-ratcheting quick cuts that appear to be designed to strain the viewer’s nerves to the breaking point, such as when a henchman threatens to waste a whining kid and initiates a death countdown. Standout imagery includes a beheading, eye-gouging, maggot-eating, face-urinating, a skull being split open by a spike, and subsequent hungry brain-gobbling.” Ideological Content Analysis Reviews

“Incredibly violent. Extremely graphic. And the final half hour packs a wallop.” Thomas Weisser, Asian Cult Cinema, Boulevard Books, 1997

Trivia:

The Bloody Pit of Horror states that Filmark International acquired the rights, “cut out most of the gore, added brand new (and completely irrelevant) scenes featuring three Caucasian actors searching for a valuable statue and released it under several different titles” such as The Jaguar Project and Jungle Killers.

Some of the score was lifted from Dawn of the Dead (1978).

The Night Eats the World is a 2018 French horror film directed by Dominique Rocher from a screenplay co-written with Jérémie Guez and Guillaume Lemans, based on Pit Agarmen’s novel La nuit a dévoré le monde. The film stars Anders Danielsen Lie, Dennis Lavant and Golshifteh Farahani.

Sam wakes one morning to find himself living in a nightmare: an army of zombies have invaded the streets of Paris and he the lone survivor. While contemplating his bleak future and how to survive, he learns he may not be alone after all…

Blue Fox Entertainment has acquired North American rights for the film, which was shot in both French and English versions. Meanwhile, the Tribeca Film Festival is screening the French version with subs.

Reviews:

” …the film is technically very proficient — kudos to production designer Sidney Dubois for artfully messing up all those fabulous Paris apartments — and has the gall to try something outside the known confines of the genre. Yet it ultimately feels too anticlimactic and lethargic.” Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter

“Rocher’s approach is admittedly more stylish and cerebral than many zombie films, but he still embraces the core principles of the genre. Rocher also composes some eerie visuals of the de-populated Parisian neighborhood and the ferocious swarms of zombie masses. Despite a relative paucity of gore, Walking Dead fans should be able to relate and approve.” Joe Bendel, J.B. Spins

‘Don’t Turn Around.’

They Remain is a 2018 horror thriller film written, edited and directed by Philip Gelatt, based on the short story -30- by Laird Barron; it stars William Jackson Harper and Rebecca Henderson.

Two scientists who share a romantic history are tasked with investigating unnatural animal behaviour on the site of a Manson Family-style cult’s compound…

Reviews:

“Burdened by a 100-minute runtime that feels fat, Gelatt could have mitigated a portion of the malaise with a few more scissor snips in the editing room. Gelatt has a handle on how he means to construct a story through atmosphere. His sense of rhythm just doesn’t balance what is essential with what is excisable.” Ian Sedensky, Culture Crypt

“The film is 100% gung-ho with its mystery, never once revealing the poker hand it holds. With much confidence and bravado in direction, Philip Gelatt breaks ground on hallucinatory colors and imagery quickly and without regret. We start struggling to grasp what’s on screen and end by coming to our own conclusion(s).” Bill Arceneaux, Neaux Reel Idea

They Remain is less interesting for its familiar ideas than its lo-fi craft. Mr. Gelatt uses negative space to emphasize Jessica and Keith’s isolation from each other and plays games with perspective, inviting speculation about Jessica’s offscreen actions. Productive ambiguity can tip into unrealized potential, and They Remain ultimately leans too heavily on vagueness as a crutch.” Ben Kenigsberg, The New York Times

“It takes a half hour of checking camera settings before They Remain really gets going at all, even if the eventual journey is a pretty one. When it does get intense, Gelatt resorts to too many hallucinatory devices and dream sequences to keep us engaged, and the flashes of naked cult members murdering people are woefully misguided.” Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com

“Creeping malevolence can be easy to overdo, and They Remain does occasionally get high on its own supply, with a second act that features a few too many scenes of the characters just tromping slowly through the woods. Still, there’s an awful a lot for horror fans to savor here, culminating in the final minutes, which go from ominous to overt with a jarring, destined-to-be-rewound suddenness.” Andrew Wright, The Stranger

‘Based on Truth and Lies’

Lords of Chaos is a 2018 British/Swedish horror feature film drama directed by Jonas Åkerlund from a screenplay co-written with Dennis Magnusson, based on the book of the same name by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind. Rory Culkin, Emory Cohen, Jack Kilmer and Sky Ferreira star.

A teenager’s quest to launch Norwegian Black Metal in Oslo in the early 1990’s results in a very violent outcome…

” …in terms of creating an explosively unforgettable narrative brimming with a sense of bedlam and anarchy, director Jonas Åkerlund has done a helluva job with Lords of Chaos, which feels a bit more like a horror movie about the destructive patterns of youth than it does a straight-up biopic…” Heather Wixson, Daily Dead

” …Åkerlund executes a somewhat remarkable feat in that the audience finds itself sympathizing with the characters despite all of the arson and bloodshed. As with Scorsese’s Goodfellas, we find ourselves rooting for some rather despicable figures […] this pic will please metal fans and outsiders alike.” Noel Lawrence, Screen Anarchy

“The film is effectively directed (by Jonas Åkerlund), shot and edited with an underlying sense of immense dread and quiet suspense that is like a hammer to the heart (and stomach). It’s an astonishingly well made project with wildly interesting (if unabashedly gruesome) subject matter that’s unforgettable because it’s so disturbing.” Louisa Moore, Screen Zealouts

“This film is very gory; sex, death and self-harm are treated in a visceral way […] If you’re looking for a movie with a sympathetic protagonist, you’re not going to find it here. However, it still made for an extremely gripping film that sticks in my mind long after it is over, and Culkin and Cohen’s performances are both chilling and memorable. Ali Shimkus, Slug magazine
